The energy of this new release
from New York’s Xenia Rubinos is so woozy and disorientated that it makes for
initially uncomfortable listening but once you tune in to the same wavelength,
this is actually a stunning and heartbroken piece. ‘Did My Best’ is a lament full
of regret and remorse that threatens to break into a party banger but actually
just stumbles home with you before stumbling in to bed with the record player still
spinning. If you can imagine Goldfrapp, Moloko and LCD Soundsystem at a therapy
retreat after all losing the same friend and then writing a tune to work
through their guilt – that’s what this sounds like but with more soulful
vocals.
