Rosie Tucker – Habanero (Epitaph Records)

I think it was the bird song at
the beginning of this track that grabbed my attention but Rosie Tucker’s
understated indie-pop sealed the deal almost immediately. ‘Habanero’ is that
rare thing in non-acoustic music that puts the song before the style and the
sound which makes this a real, genuine joy to listen to. The guitars have a
really nice Belly meets Fountains of Wayne chug, Tucker’s is smooth and rich like
caramel and the whole thing is bathed in the warmth of the early evening
Californian sun. A huge talent but, I suspect, one that would be happier just writing
and creating than having to sell the music to anyone willing to listen.
