Ed Cosens, for the uninitiated,
can normally be found hanging around with the Reverend as one of his Makers but
he ain’t half bad on his own either, so I’m chuffed to be able to share this
track with you. ‘On the Run’ finds Cosens wandering on the moors to a melody
that is both forlorn and full of a sense of optimism, like a Paul McCartney song
written for a man on a mission for a mercy killing. Vocally, Cosens has a gorgeous,
crooning tone – not unlike Richard Hawley – and that is matched by beautifully arranged
instrumentation with minimal fuss or fat but a sinister sound of tinkling
ivories always in the background, reminding you of the sinister undertones of
this superb tune.
