CULANN - EP REVIEW

Culann - Songs of Saints & Reivers EP

Release Date: Out Now

Scottish collective Culann have established both critical and public acclaim in their homeland but with this new EP I think they could be set for wider fame. 'Songs of Saints & Reivers' opens with 'Rovers' which takes the celtic sound on a rock odyssey with snarling guitars, warrior drums and a the kind of vocals that would call an army in to battle. 'City Eternal' maintains the energy albeit with a more playful and enthusiastic melody but a huge shout out to the drumming which wouldn't sound out of place on a metal track such is the ferocity and complexity.

The heaviness comes back on 'Saint Andrew' which grinds and wails with laser-eyed focus while the drums revel in the freedom to unleash fury on the rest of the band. The EP finishes up on 'Heart of the Sea', a track that opens with semi-playful fiddle melody before an altogether calmer and more at-peace song unfolds, showing off the band's softer and folkier sides. Hugely talented musicians and an EP that shows their skill, flexibility and sheer brilliance. The rest of the world needs to sit up and pay attention.
