Everyone Says Hi - Everyone Says Hi (Chrysalis)
Release Date: Out Now
A ten track debut album from a British indie super(b)group, you say? Don't mind if I do. Everyone Says Hi's eponymous album gets underway with 'Somebody Somewhere' and a subdued, Kinks-esque strum which swells with a lazy bass and shuffling beat to create the kind of song that was written to waft across a park in the English summertime. 'Lucky Stars' continues the laid-back vibe with elements of Rooney or Redd Kross in there while 'Only One' is a smooth slice of piano based indie-rock that would be perfect for a night-time drive around Reno.
The easy-breezy sound is intoxicating and a much needed blast of warmth that continues on 'Brain Freeze' with soft guitars and sprinkled 70s keys tempting you to the pool for cocktails and cigars. On 'I Wish I Was In New York City' we are treated to a real dose of Americana with a rambling acoustic guitar and vocals that whisper through the night as the Greyhound bus rolls on through the endless desert. 'On The Same Side' is moodier and darker as the piano plods remorselessly onward before blossoming into something more hopeful in the chorus while 'I Wasn't Dreaming' stays at the piano to create a sound feels like the exact mid-point between Embrace and the Pet Shop Boys.
This is a beautiful album that you can really enjoy as it washes over you but 'Holding On To Let Go' steps up with a little more pep in its step, blending influences from the likes of the Beach Boys, the Byrds and the Faces. Penultimate track 'Tried and Failed' has the spirit of John Lennon front and centre throughout before the album finishes up on 'Did I Just Fall In Love' - a distinctly dreamy end to a predominantly dreamy album. Retro influences mixed with modern production values and some 21st century lyricism - a great combination that makes for a winning album.
