Callima - Where We End/Don't Give In
Release Date: Out Now
Cornish four piece Callima are relatively new on the scene but they've already started making waves and catching the eyes and ears of those in the know. This double track release technically came at the end of 2024 but a new year demands new music and it doesn't get much newer than a bunch of teenagers finding their way. Kicking off with 'Where We End', the band settle in to an indie-grunge riff that takes me straight back to the 90s but with vocals that move effortlessly from a moody mumble to a soaring melody. This falls somewhere between Bush, early Arctic Monkeys, Cast and the Libertines which makes for a heady brew and steeped in British influences but with a transatlantic appeal.
'Don't Give In', by comparison, is a scratchier, more garage-punk affair that rattles along at pace sounding like Jake Bugg or Gerry Cinnamon with the brilliantly raw and energetic backing of a band still finding their flow. The songwriting, energy and performance is all there which is the hard part so now a little polish needs applying and maybe trimming the song length a little but we might just have a proper band on our hands. I can't stop thinking of the chanting of 'Kali Ma' in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom whenever I read their name though...
