Maple Ward - The Gardener

There aren't enough songs out there written about grandparents (although I have my suspicions about 'Fire Starter' by the Prodigy) but Maple Ward has come up trumps on new single 'The Gardener'. Written about her Grandad, this track starts with an easy acoustic strum and Ward's rich, folky vocal which wraps around you like a familiar scarf or a favourite Joni Mitchell song. A deftly deployed bit of cello and a genuine fondness in the lyrics brings the emotion bubbling to the surface. This is songwriting in its distilled and purest form with genuine heart and meaning. Glorious in an understated way.
