Frances Willow - Crystal Girl

London based but Devon made maid Frances Willow has a fine line in modern folk songs and her new single, 'Crystal Girl', is an absolute beauty. Dreamy guitars and a meandering synth melody get things going before the warm and gentle vocals add to the ambiance which is snowflake like in its delicate nature. There is an impish quality to this initially but then a jazz inspired guitar and drum combination joins in and the whole mood shifts to something more akin to Janelle Monae or Corinne Bailey Rae slow jamming on a Sunday morning. I'm not sure I've heard a song switch personalities in such a smooth yet dramatic way for some time and it is a rush just listening to it.
