SAM PALLADIO - ALBUM REVIEW

Sam Palladio - The Perfect Summer's Day,
Before We Lost The Night

Release Date: Out Now

Kent born but Penzance raised, Sam Palladio counts himself as a Cornishman but is probably more widely recognised in connection to Nashville due to his part in the show of the same name. 'The Perfect Summer's Day, Before We Lost The Night', Palladio's debut album, gets going with 'Meanwhile in London', a song with a sweeping, brooding energy which instantly draws you in to his world with intimate vocals and confessional lyrics. 'Tennessee' is up next with Foo Fighter Chris Shiflett along for the party which takes a more rock'n'roll direction but one that swaggers and struts with a sense of confidence that only comes from having a guitar and a microphone at your disposal. The energy keeps going on 'Tears In The Carpark' with searing guitars, driving drums and smooth vocals while 'Something On My Mind' is a gentler vibe with touch of the Cornish folk about the songwriting albeit with a rock-ballad delivery.

There's another cameo appearance on 'Spill Your Heart' as Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro joins in for a lurching slow dance full of brilliantly meaty guitars and gorgeous vocal harmonies. 'Gone Like The Summer' is a festival-ready stomper of a song which leads into 'SMF', a Beatles-esque acoustic strum that packs more of a punch than you might expect it to initially. On 'B.O.A.T.' we get to see the alt-pop side of Palladio with an angular guitar riff to bounce along to but then 'Bullet For Your Love' strips it down to piano and vocals before building to a powerful finish.

Penultimate track 'Jenni' has a country tinge but with that English songwriting style that is more clipped and precise - this is perfect Radio 2 fodder. Final track, 'Wake Me Up In Nashville', is a genuinely beautiful song full of vulnerability, softly sweet melodies and a joyous intimacy. Palladio has a real talent for lyric writing and an ear for melody which has been wrapped up in a slickly produced bow making this a seriously impressive album for any stage in any career, let alone a debut offering. Definitely one worth spending some time with.
