MORIATY - LIVE REVIEW

Moriaty + Boss Cass + Mutant Menace @ the
Junction, Plymouth

Gig Date: 27th September 2024

Sometimes, just sometimes, what you really need is some good mates, a great venue and, most importantly, some rock'n'roll. Luckily, when that need arises you can always count on places like the Junction in Plymouth to serve a Friday night of goodness to feed your soul. We arrived a little late but still managed to catch the tail end of Cornish duo Mutant Menace who were ripping into the stage in the style of Queens of the Stone Age but with a punk energy that made me want to come back for more. I was really glad to finally get a chance to see Boss Cass live as the one-man-whirlwind has such a rapidly growing reputation  that I feared I might have missed my chance. With a neon backdrop, the Exeter solo artist set about creating havoc on stage but this wasn't pointless rage without focus. Oh no, there is socio-political injustice in the cross hairs of every tune as songs like the pro-NHS 'Tea & Toast' connected with an audience who wanted a good time but not at the expense of their values.

The main attraction was Plymouth duo Moriaty playing their debut album, 'The Devil's Child', to celebrate it's 10th anniversary and boy were they in mood to celebrate. Frontman Jordan looked like he had been auditioning for the role of an oompa loompa guest spot in the new Beetlejuice movie but that didn't detract from the force of rock riffs coming out of his guitar. Dirty riffs, powerhouse drums and vocals delivered with the perfect balance of melody and energy made this a compelling show but one that also drew me into the mosh-pit for the first time in a decade. This was the kind of gig that left the audience feeling euphoric, refreshed and re-energised and that should keep me going for a while.
