CHLOE - ALBUM REVIEW

Chloe - Trouble In Paradise

Release Date: Out Now

This is a 16 (that’s sixteen) track album from Chloe so make sure you clear some space in your diary for this because we’re talking quality AND quantity here. ‘All I Got (Free Falling)’ gets us started with a piano melody and multiple layers of vocals soothing the soul and cleansing the palate for the rest of the album. Along with Ty Dolla $ign, Chloe introduces ‘Might As Well’ for a slow jam about just going with the flow and not worrying about the consequences before ‘Boy Bye’ picks up the pace for a track that is more poppy and could be Taylor as much as it could be Beyonce.

‘Redemption’ is more of an interlude than a full song with a Rhianna-esque sway to it before ‘Temporarily Single’ straps on the acoustic guitar for gentle sway of a song that is perfect for slow dancing on a beach at night surrounding by tiki torches. There’s a darker tone to ‘Rose’ which feels more urban a la the Weeknd, showing Chloe’s versatility and range of influences as well as her lack of need for a man as long as she’s got her favourite toy to hand. Anderson .Paak joins the party for ‘Favorite’ which has a brilliant road tripping vibe which makes me want to call in sick and hang out with my best people. ‘Same Lingerie’ is about as personal as a song gets as Chloe sings about missing her ex in the most physical of ways – there’s no real way to review this one, you just have to listen to it and hope someone misses you that much.

YG Marley is up next to join in on ‘Never Let You Go’ which is mellower and less intense but still gets you swaying while ‘Want Me’ is a more delicate and gentle track with rippling acoustic notes and soft, sweet vocals. ‘Moments’ is a real phones in the air concert moment former single ‘FYS’ still sounds huge even nestled in the back half of this album. ‘Nice Girls Finish Last’ is another sexually charged R’n’B track that you can save for date night but ‘Strawberry Lemonade’ does the same job in a more radio friendly way with a Chic-esque guitar line and hella catchy melody.

The final guest of the album appears on penultimate track ‘Shake’ as Jeremih pops up to add his vocals to the track that speeds through at 100mph before closing track ‘Somebody’ presents the album’s real anthem that will draw people in only to hit them with those sexually frustrated/confident tracks hidden in the middle. This is an album about being a woman with all the complexity, confusion, frustration and power that is encompassed in that. Eve new that and so does Chloe – there’s always trouble in paradise but that’s what makes it so good.
