GOO - EP REVIEW

Goo - Chomp EP

Release Date: Out Now

They might look like they come from Portland or Seattle but Keighley is home for my new favourite band, the brilliantly named Goo. The band's 'Chomp' EP is six tracks of fuzzed up gloriousness and I'm here to walk you through it so grab a beer and put on your best bowling shirt, this is going to be fun. The EP opens up with the intense guitars of 'Inside Out' which has an energy somewhere between Elastica's dead-eyed vocals, Lush's wry sense of humour and the melodies of Charly Bliss. It's a strong start.

The party continues with 'Arcadia' which reminds me of the Beths but if they were jamming with Veruca Salt to get a little extra power for their melodies - which are top notch by the way. Ironically, the next track is called Beth but is the kinds of song that would be played during a vindication montage in an alternative American teen film about small town malaise. 'Rush' is the most American sounding of the six with a Weezer-esque riff and vocals that cut through the California heat with a coolness that money can't buy.

'Call In Sick' is my favourite track of this collection but it sticks out like a saw thumb with influences that sound more like Maximo Park, Young Knives and the Futureheads than our cousins across the Atlantic. The EP closes out with 'De Novo' that has a darker and more troubled lo-fi energy but the intricate guitars and vocal harmonies make this a luxurious mood to wallow in.
