LYNDHURST - EP REVIEW

Lyndhurst - Platforms EP

Release Date: 14th July 2023

Lyndhurst are a paire of music makers by the names of Oscar Ball and Dan Carney and, I'll be honest, I nearly passed on this EP for no particular reason but I'm glad I didn't. The duo's new EP, 'Platforms', opens with 'Swimming' and a beat that promises something and then delivers it as the processed melodies, percussion and melodics build around that beat like a mix of Lemon Jelly and Cosmo Sheldrake. I spent a lot of time learning to drive in London back in the day so a track called 'North Circular' gave me a few flashbacks but the soothing synths and laid back beat might just be the tonic for that particular mental ailment.

'Interlude Rhythm' is a scattered and itchy percussive break in proceedings that leads in to 'Transcriptor' complete with wind chimes, strings and a cinematic feel that is an absolute delight to be swept away on without a care in the world. 'Group of Three' has an ambient folk feel, as though the Aphex Twin shut himself away in some remote Icelandic hut with just a Moog and a laptop for company to create soothing and cleansing music. The EP closes out on 'First Ever Thing' which leaves the listener in a state of Sigur Ros-esque bliss, awash with strings and warm melodies. This instrumental is that rare thing these days in that it is a collection of melodies made without ego or distinct message, just tones, vibes and sensations. A rare and wonderful thing.
