BONY MACARONI - ALBUM REVIEW

Bony Macaroni - The Big Bucks (Redfield
Records)

Release Date: Out Now

I'm a little bit late with this one as this album has been out for a few weeks now but I wanted to make sure you're all aware of this ace new album from Dutch nut-jobs Bony Macaroni. 'The Big Bucks' is an album themed around financial ruin and kicks off with the punchy 69 second indie-pop ditty that is 'F.I.' which bleeds in to 'MDA' which is full of Weezer meets Wheatus skater-pop melodies. Title track 'The Big Bucks' continues the stylistic theme of West Coast slacker vibes with wall to wall guitars and the vocal style that makes you want to head to California (via Amsterdam).

'Marissa' is a love song of sorts with an infectious energy and sunshine in its soul before 'Grind Me into the Paste' takes the album in a more reflective and intense direction with those drawled vocals taking centre stage. On '(Covered in) Scabs' the band take inspiration from bands like the Violent Femmes and early REM while 'Bombs Away' sets a more atmospheric tone with a mellower pace and a meandering melody. There's a more mainstream vibe to 'Hollow' which will play well with indie-rock fans on both sides of the Atlantic but 'Disappoint You' has a more English feel to it with Frank Turner-esque songwriting being delivered through that countrified vocal.

The album's penultimate track is 'The Claw' which is almost certainly a live favourite because of the alt-pop-punk energy and melodies that can be shouted back to the band without any musical training. 'The Best I Can Do' brings this collection to a close with an alternative approach to a well-being regime for the 21st century. Bony Macaroni are that rare thing these days in a band that seem to have a huge natural ability to find melodies and match those with energy and stitch it together with interesting and, often, amusing lyrics. Better late than never then.
