COSIAL - EP REVIEW

Cosial - Sports EP

Release Date: 12th April 2023

The exciting talent that is Cosial has a debut EP on the table for us to enjoy and she's called it, simply, 'Sports'. Simple and to the point. The EP opens up the first of five tracks, 'Pool Chalk', which is a dreamy, sun blessed slice of indie that weaves and sways like someone freshly stoned trying to negotiate their way back through a bar. Recent single 'Michael's Song' is a perkier albeit introspective song full of delicate energy and bristling charm behind Cosial's yearning vocals. 'Today' starts with the line "Today I will get in my car and drive it in a tree. OK, probably not but I'll find a different way to bleed" and the soft delivery of those lines is a thrilling juxtaposition to the cutting darkness of lyrics and that's part of the charm of this burgeoning artist.

The warmth and softness of 'Mud' continues the Cosial theme with those heartfelt and heartbroken lyrics sneaking in almost unnoticed again as the sound exists in a Venn diagram between the Sundays, Lana Del Rey and Thea Gilmore. Closing track 'Pity Drink' has a wooziness that speaks of self awareness and a sense of unease while the line "I am bridesmaid number two" is absolutely cutting of oneself. Cosial displays a calm effortlessness in her songwriting that belies the troubled soul behind the words and that mixture is, frankly, intoxicating. Beautifully intoxicating.
