Gozer Goodspeed - Escape Hatch Fever (Lights & Lines Records)
2023 is looking like it might be a big year for Plymouth yarn-spinner Gozer Goodspeed and his forthcoming new single 'Escape Hatch Fever' is getting his year off to a great start. A lazily strummed set of blues chords and a laid-back beat set the scene for an indolent afternoon stuck indoors as the grey surrounds you from all angles. Goodspeed's distinctive vocal drawl joins in with similar energy until the chorus steps things up a little and the casual wail of a lead guitar rasps in from a back room that you can't quite locate. Delightfully, there's an acoustic version included which gives the song a real front-porch in New Orleans vibe before, hold the front page, we get an actual B-side too! 'Only Little Victories is a previously unreleased track and is a loosely strummed serenade that sounds like it's being sung out from the front steps of an unassuming house on Plymouth's Barbican seafront. You can almost hear the boots on the cobbled streets in between the rootsy string strumming. Like I said, 2023 could be a big year for this talented troubadour.
