This is the second single from Tom Jenkins that I've had the pleasure of reviewing and I'm well on my way to being smitten. 'Magic Mushroom Island' might sound like a secret level of MarioKart but it's actually a chugging indie-rock anthem that was made for pumping out of the car stereo on summer road trip. The driving drums, chunky guitars and Jenkins' died-in-the-wool indie vocals all combine to make a perfectly good sound but it's the songwriting that elevates this track above the other pretenders as the chord progressions take you buy surprise and the structures jump about with a complete disregard for convention. And I love me a man that defies convention.
