SKINNER - SINGLE REVIEW

Skinner - The Slump (Faction Records)

Release Date: Out Now

On initial listening, this release from Dublin soloist Skinner set my teeth on edge a little but I persisted and then the bass line saved me (the bass is always my saviour). 'The Slump' settles in to a funky lo-fi disco groove with elements of Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem and the Fall all bouncing off each other like an energetic but chaotic indie disco at two in the morning. Wiry guitars, fat bass, itchy beats and sneering vocals are all fantastic but then the Peter Gabriel-esque double tracked guitars and a juicy sax solo provide the icing and cherry on the cake. Never judge a book by the cover or a song by the intro - if you do, you might just miss a gem like this.
