I will admit that on first listen I dismissed this latest single from Penzance based Nell Davies as unbelievably twee and only half a step above the kind of songs they sing on CBeebies. However, beneath the cheery and sickly sweet pop melodies of 'Happy Birthday' lies a wry smile and a dry sense of humour. Running through a list of birthday wishes, Davies hopes that a neighbour blasting out Oasis gets a power cut and a passing pigeon misses its target with a streak of shit. Somewhere between Clare Grogan, Helen Love and the energy of an over-creative 10 year old is where Nell Davies exists and whether you love it or hate it, you have to admire the nous of finding that particular niche and making it her own.
