WOOZE - EP REVIEW

Wooze - Get Me Too A Nunnery EP (Young Poet)

Release Date: Out Now

I've been blown away by a string of singles from duo Wooze this year but this EP pulls it all together to really land the final punch. British/Korean pair Jamie She and Theo Spark came together through art school attendance and we should all be grateful that they did for 'Get Me Too A Nunnery' is one of the strongest EPs of this year and any other. 'Witch Slap (IOU)' opens with a wall of guitars grinding against the front of your skull before the deep, devilish vocals join in as if tempting you down to hell for a dinner party of ghoulish proportions. On 'Mighty Cloud' the pair introduce some hyperactive melodies to their relentless guitar'n'drums onslaught as the Bowie inspired vocals continue to intoxicate and hypnotise.

'Tu Es Moi' has something of the funk about as a popping bass line arrives in a time machine from the 80s while the guitars snake around your hips and the beat gets in to your feet. The energy reaches fever pitch on 'Family Picture' as that direct guitar sound hits you head on again and sound is entirely Duran Duran meets Sparks at a karaoke night where they are performing Royal Blood and Black Keys songs. The piece de resistance is closing and title track 'Get Me Too A Nunnery' which has a robotic Rocky Horror sound to it which will appeal to Franz Ferdinand fans who like a little Young Knives insanity in their art-rock. Even as I finish typing this I want to go back and start again, this really is that good an EP. Imagine if they recorded album? Jesus....
