LITTLE THIEF - ALBUM REVIEW

Little Thief - Under The Patio

Release Date: 17th September 2021

Bristol duo Little Thief down waste any time getting down to business on their hotly anticipated new album 'Under The Patio' and it's a thrill ride you don't want to miss out on. 'All Our Sins' gets things underway with itchy guitars and plenty of swagger that puts this somewhere between the Arctic Monkeys, the Killers and the Paris Riots. Superb recent single 'Freak' is up next giving it that Black Keys meets Royal Blood groove with the drums pounding a steady rhythm for the funky, blues tinged guitar riff to follow with a metronomic hypnotism. Third track 'Bringing It Back' continues with the style theme but there's a murderous intent and darkness to this one that makes you sit up and pay attention. Did you lock the doors.....?

After such a triumphant opening trio it is only fitting that title track 'Under The Patio' takes things down a notch on the pace front with a Radiohead inspired slice of shoegaze that erupts in the chorus just to keep you on edge. The Black Keys vibe is back on the chiming guitars of 'Doctor' as the distant, fuzzed up vocals are beautifully disorientating while 'Lost In Love' lurks in the shadows, waiting to pounce on unsuspecting victims lured in by the angular twitch of the guitar vs drums battle. The clatterbang of noise that opens 'Jackpot' is a grunge fuelled delight that heralds the kind of attack on the senses that used to be commonplace in the 90s.

There's a cool jazz feel to 'Won't Come Back Alive' that has a tinge of latter day Blur about it as the choir-like chorus sings "Alive, alive, we won't come back alive" with a sense of euphoric inevitability. Penultimate track 'Gold Rush' is a stomping behemoth of a song with spectacularly thumping drums leading the march towards an anthemic chorus. The album drives off in to the sunset with 'Caroline' blasting out of the car stereo, a tune with a Feeder-esque soul but the sounds of the Zutons rattling around in the trunk. This is an album that demands your attention with the power it exudes but then holds your gaze with the superb songwriting, imaginative musicianship and genuine soul in each track.
