K.FLAY - EP REVIEW

K.FLAY - Inside Voices (BMG)

Release Date: Out Now

The indomitable K.FLAY has finally released her much anticipated EP 'Inside Voices' which is full of treats, surprises and, well, just great songs. Things kick off, quite literally, with recent single 'Four Letter Words' containing a hypnotic riff and K.FLAY rapping her way out of being well behaved when the world is pushing down on you. 'Good Girl' (co written with Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons) continues the theme with the kind of riot alt-pop that has a strong empowerment vibe as well as an ear-worm of a melody.

Travis Barker of Blink 182 guests on 'Dating My Dad' which feels like Gwen Stefani earlier in her career working with, well, Travis Barker and it's a hugely enjoyable ride. 'TGIF' brings the one and only Tom Morello along for the ride as they duo produce a track so sharp, so in your face and so raw that you feel like you're in the front row at a live show just waiting for that chorus or that Morello trademark guitar solo to drop in.

The EP finishes out with 'My Name Isn't Katherine', K.FLAY's most overt rap track that sits somewhere between Eminem's early style and the lyrical content of Lily Allen or the Ting Tings. I could be wrong but I feel K.FLAY is really following an original and fairly lone path which is hard but if I were a betting man then I'd be backing this woman every step of the way.
