RAINA SOKOLOV-GONZALEZ – SINGLE REVIEW

Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez – Better For You

Release Date: Out Now

It’s not often you come across a piece of art with such completeness as this but then it’s not often you come across an artist like Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez either. The New York based musician has drawn on her Latin and East European heritage to create ‘Better For You’, a song that is not only hugely stylish but also has deep substance in the way it tackles the male gaze head on. “Is it better for you if I’m reclining? Is it better for you if I’m resigning?” are the opening lyrics sung with cool Jazz delivery but also a direct tone. Sokolov-Gonzalez then unveils one of the coolest, chilled, Latin beach inspired melodies juxtaposed brilliantly with the lyrics which layer up the ways in which men demand so much of women with such unrealistic and other worldly expectations. For so many reasons, this is getting added to my longlist for single of the year and I would be hugely surprised if it didn’t make it to the short list as well.
