PENFRIEND – SINGLE REVIEW

Penfriend – Black Car (My Big Sister Records)

Release Date: Out Now

This is the third single from Laura Kidd under her new moniker of Penfriend and ‘Black Car’ is her most reflective piece yet whilst still retaining the future-apocalyptic vibe of previous single. “Remember the summer when everyone stayed at home, ships in a bottle stacked up with our lives on hold” is the opening couplet and if that doesn’t resonate with, well, everyone I don’t know what will. The melodies sway between lo-fi electro and expansive soundtrack worthy epicness while the video sees Penfriend wondering around a drained estuary with Muse levels of paranoia. The fears for the future and despair about the present could put some people off but when it’s paired with great melodies and moody, pulsing beats it is hard to resist getting drawn in.
