This is the second single from
Penfriend’s forthcoming ‘Exotic Monsters’ album and ‘Cancel Your Hopes’ steps
things up a notch with both the music and the video. Musically, this is
something akin to grunge-pop with an apocalyptic sense of conscience which,
along with the rapid and unforgiving pace of delivery, makes this an intense
but essential listen. The combination of growling guitar and keyboard melodies
is reminiscent of Helen Love but when that is paired with the outpouring of
despair in both lyrics and visuals there is a definite taste of bittersweetness
left in your mouth. Like going on the perfect date with someone only to find
out they are being executed the very next day (not ironic Alanis, just
massively bittersweet).
