THE DAMN STRAIGHTS – EP REVIEW

The Damn Straights – The Damn Straights EP
(Bastion Music Group)

Release Date: Out Now

If you haven’t yet embraced the Damn Straights then you haven’t been paying attention which is remiss and, frankly, rude so you’d better listen up and listen good, because this is their debut EP and it’s damn good. ‘The Damn Straights’ EP opens up with the duo’s anthemic recent single ‘The World’s on Fire (Let it Burn)’ which finds vocalist Herbal T on fine form, deciding to just go with the flow for once and stop fighting. Conversely, ‘Blow It Up’ takes a searing guitar riff and some sharp-shooting beats to create the kind of song that will have any live venue jumping uncontrollably – “there’s something and I don’t know what but I know, I know we’ve got to blow it up”. Who could resist that call to action?

On ‘Alarm Clock’ the one-man rhythm section of Adam Gibbons (aka Lack of Afro) lays down a thick slab, which is sprinkled with some piano and organ melodies allowing Mr T (sorry, couldn’t resist) to unfurl a sweet flow that takes on the all too familiar issues of Groundhog Day-itis. The EP finishes with ‘Never Get Enough’ which walks with funk and menace in equal measure as the sinister guitar picks create a soundscape that you want to burst out of such is the oppressive quality of that heavy bass. Two guys with a sack full of talent and a bucket of funk have laid down one hell of a marker for the 2021 EP release competition and you get the feeling they are only in third gear.
