There’s an easy laid-back vibe to
this new release from John Orpheus that could sucker you in to thinking this
was a throw away pop tune but if you listen carefully, you’ll find so much
more. ‘Fela Awoke (I Will Miss You)’ takes a Bob Marley inspired riff, throws
in a swaying beat and Orpheus’ naturally soulful and rich vocal tones to create
a song that is instantly enjoyable which is always half the battle. Lyrically,
however, this song takes on the mixture of joy and despair that comes with the passing
of a soul and the inspiration that gives to you. Fela and Marley are name
checked and Orpheus’ own grandmother is given a tribute as the gardener to his
soil. A beautiful song with so much at its heart and soul to enjoy and
appreciated.
