ADAM GIBBONS – EP REVIEW

Adam Gibbons – Here We Go! EP (LOA
Records)

Release Date: Out Now

Having conquered the funky world with Lack of Afro and then taken on the Hip-Hop world with the Damn Straights (more of which soon), Exeter based producer and musician extraordinaire Adam Gibbons is now turning his attention to soundtracks. The ‘Here We Go!’ EP shows Gibbons at his best as he takes you on a cinematic journey of sharp sounds, tight beats and the kind of funky riffs that sweep you away from the real world. ‘Here We Go!’ gets going with a Bullitt-inspired car-chase tune full of funk, horns and urgency all competing for first place which is all you need to set up an exciting scene without saying a word.

On ‘Journey to Bastion’ we go Ennio Morricone with Quincy Jones at the console with sweeping strings and a Latin influence but that Western feel chiming throughout. The fuzzed-up guitars and pounding drums of ‘On the Run’ keep the energy going before ‘Getting Intimate’ slows things down for a romantic and, dare I say, erotic interlude with luxurious strings and subtle horns setting the mood perfectly. The funk comes back with some added spice on ‘I Think He’s Dead’ which totally works as the twist soundtrack for that moment in the movie when things take an unexpected turn.

This EP culminates on ‘Jordan’s Return’ which has the funkiest guitar sound which makes you just want to burst in through the double doors wearing a leather trench coat before giving the room a collective stink-eye. I have never wanted to watch a film based purely on the instrumental soundtrack before but there is a first time for everything and this is that time. Adam Gibbons seems to be able to turn his hand to just about anything so I can’t wait for his take on Panpipes Moods.
