MIDDLE KIDS – SINGLE REVIEW

Middle Kids – Questions (Lucky Number)

Release Date: Out Now

OK, so there’s no doubting that this is a great song but before we get to that, I feel that I need to pause a moment to mention the truly outstanding video. Australian trio Middle Kids have created a seemingly one-take video that features complex hand clapping, a brass band and a horse walking in to a restaurant while the band perform on stage – it is a real piece of art. The music is the main story though and ‘Questions’ is a great track that uses those hand clapped rhythms to give energy to the sorrowful keyboard chords. Then the bouncing bassline and rimshot percussion makes the track build with Hannah Joy’s Feist-esque vocals adding some beauty to proceedings. And then comes the brass band, the horse (visually, not musically) and this becomes the most joyfully sad song I’ve heard in a long time. Video of the year? Very possibly. Single of the year? It wouldn’t surprise me.
