Listen up folks, Scotland’s queen
of alt-pop Malka was struck with the dreaded C-19 last year but she is bouncing
back and, in the meantime, managed to knock out the excellent new single ‘Reach
Out’. Weirdly, I think this might be my favourite track of hers so far as the
drone of the synths, slow percussion and near-whispered vocals draw you in to
the fever-dream of someone suffering in their bed during the longest night of
their lives. However, the chorus picks up the pace with a Goldfrapp meets Kylie
at her most playful vibe which provides the perfect counterpoint to the darkness
in the verses. Darkness, light, style and substance – most artists don’t manage
that in their entire career. Malka managed it with long COVID. Think on that.
