IVORY LANE – EP REVIEW

Ivory Lane – Confetti EP

Release Date: Out Now

I often like to mention where an artist is based and their roots so as to contextualise the music and give you, dear reader, some sense of location. However, in the case of Ivory Lane, to tell you that she is based in Nashville might give you entirely the wrong idea about her music. Lane’s ‘Confetti’ EP is a four track masterpiece in the art of sad pop with heartfelt lyrics and sumptuous melodies.

Opening with ‘December’, Lane sets about creating a moody piano atmosphere but matches it with an upbeat rhythm to create something that is pitched between Adele, Katy Perry and Sia which is no bad place to be. ‘Lonely Hearts’ follows next and the warmth of those soft piano notes is matched by Lane’s gentle vocals tones to create a song that is the musical equivalent of drying your eyes, taking a deep breath and knocking back what’s left of your drink before getting back on the dance floor.

The title track, ‘Confetti’, is the standout among four excellent tunes here, as the piano ripples like the leaves of Autumn falling in a sun dappled glade with a very real sense of heartbreak and of someone being at the fork in the road between dwelling on the past and looking to the future. However, just in case you feel yourself getting a little down, Lane brings our mood up with the triumphant, uplifting and life affirming final track, ‘God Save the Queens’, which is surely due to be an anthem for those in need of support and in need of supporting others. Ivory Lane has a rare talent in both song writing and performing but it is her ability to tap directly into a rich emotional vein that is the real thing of beauty to behold.
