THE HAAR – SINGLE REVIEW

The Haar – The Parting Glass (Under the Eaves
Records)

Release Date: Out Now

I do like it when musicians take a new approach to creating and this new release from folk ensemble the Haar does just that. ‘The Parting Glass’ is a sombre and traditional folk arrangement recorded in lockdown with unusual stepping off point of the sweet, mournful vocals of Molly Donnery. Then follows fiddle, accordion and bodhran (in that order) all improvising around the melodies and the silences created by Donnery. Over the six and a half minutes of this improvisation, the quartet control the energy in ebbs and flows like the stormy Irish seas they will know so well and, much like the musicians themselves, it is hard to avoid finding yourself in a closed-eyed reverie. Definitely one to be enjoyed at leisure and with your full attention.
