Secrets of Pompeii are definitely one of my favourite things about 2020 and
this last release of the year certainly cements that feeling. ‘The End of Love’
blends so many different influences and genres that it’s hard to pin down but,
like a jet-black slippery eel, it must be tamed. There is the Nick Cave-esque
vocal performance, the theatrical arrangement, the overall vibe of the
National, Grinderman and IDLES doing some sort of collaboration in the early
hours of the morning and the sheer stylishness of a song that is kept firmly
inline by a bassline that grumbles like a gruff Tarantino voice over. Take a
bow, gentlemen.
