Harbottle & Jonas – The Beacon

In times of troubled waters and
stormy seas, it is reassuring to see Devon duo Harbottle & Jonas appear on
the horizon like a lighthouse through the fog. Fittingly enough, their new single
is named ‘The Beacon’ and its folky stylings atop rumbling percussion do feel
as though they are guiding us to shore. The vocal harmonies intertwine beautifully
as always but what is really noticeable is the sheer size of the musicianship
which, when it is at full swell, feels like a powerful, undulating wave beneath
the rickety old fishing boat we are clinging on to. With gentle breakdown
building to a glorious crescendo, this feels like the moment that Harbottle
& Jonas went from being a duo to existing as a full-blown band and although
I loved them before, I think I might just love this new sound even more.
