BROTHER & BONES – SINGLES REVIEW

Brother & Bones – Like Islands/Picking Up the
Pieces (Last Step Records)

Release Date: Out Now

After what feels like years of silence, Cornish collective Brother & Bones have started firing out tracks like there’s not tomorrow – and maybe there isn’t, who are we to know? As I’m catching up with this quick fire release schedule, I’ve bundled together two of their most recent tracks for you. Starting with ‘Like Islands’, Brother & Bones seem to have found a niche somewhere between Radiohead and Incubus but that distinctive vocal of Rich Thomas makes this very much their own track. The skittish beats and atmospheric guitar notes give this a nervous energy before the track breaks away in to a layered and euphoric crescendo that feels like it’s veering in to EDM territory but with organic instrumentation. It is very exciting.

‘Picking Up The Pieces’ initially feels more like a traditional Brother & Bones track but one that’s been fed through a digital chipping machine and the pieces have been put back together in a different order. It is unnerving, unexpected and awe inspiring to hear coming out of my headphones but if you dare to let your imagination run wild then just think would this would sound like pumping out of a PA in a packed venue. There is very clear evidence of evolution and progress for Brother & Bones here so that time away has obviously been incredibly well spent and 2021 feels like it could be a year that they achieve great things in.
