I want to say Idles are back but
feel like they are a welcome and benevolent omnipresence in our lives these
days so I’ll just say ‘Idles are’. The Bristolian five-piece’s new single, ‘A Hymn’,
starts like the emerging noodlings of a practising garage band before emerging
gently in to something with more edge, more sinister energy but also the
fragility that Idles are so famous for. This is a five minute opus that takes
it’s time to unfold like a flower under dawn’s early light but that repeated refrain
of “I wanna be loved, everybody does” is drenched in sadness as the accompanying
video shows the band driving and being driven to Tesco for a bit of shopping.
