R.D. THOMAS – EP REVIEW

R.D. Thomas – This Bloom EP

Release Date: Out Now

This is the second solo EP from erstwhile Brother & Bones frontman R.D. Thomas following on from last month’s ‘Headlines’ collection. The three tracks comprising this release open with title track ‘This Bloom’ which has a strangely comforting subdued nature to it. The gentle acoustic strum, basic beat and sprinkled tinkled ivories create a vibe akin to the sunrise leaking in on the morning after you’ve stayed up all night arguing and then talking before releasing that this relationship just isn’t working anymore and you’re finally free in the most positive way possible.

‘Oxheart Blues’ shows of the more mellow side of Thomas’ voice as the late-night confessional vocal tones soothe while the piano note raindrops scatter and bead on the windowpane and the Cornish winds gently howl outside. The closing track, ‘Our Majesty’, has a daybreak energy about it and again Thomas’ voice changes tone to stir the senses and get you out to meet the rising sun with full lungs, a light heart and open eyes. This isn’t soul music but it is music for the soul and lord knows we could all do with a bit of that right now. One to get in to your ears as soon as you can spare the time to properly listen and I mean properly listen.
