OLLIE DIXON – SINGLE REVIEW

Ollie Dixon – Interlude, I / Time

Release Date: 5th June 2020

It’s a huge challenge to create anything during a time of such uncertainty and anxiety that we currently find ourselves in, so I applaud all creatives who are still plugging away at the moment. Special mention, however, goes to artists who are trying new things and challenging themselves beyond just getting up and coping with the news onslaught each day. Devon singer-songwriter Ollie Dixon is one such artist who has experimented with this pair of new tracks, taking a different direction to his previous work.

‘Time’ is a brooding, atmospheric and moody track that grumbles and groans in the shadows in a way that brings to mind Jeff Buckley’s more introspective moments but also fits alongside fellow Devon musicians Jamie Yost and Drakes Island. ‘Interlude, I’ has an almost cinematic quality to it with scattered melodic strains, a rumbling and ominous underbelly and the general feel of a scene with no dialogue from Twin Peaks. Dixon is clearly pushing himself and trying new things here which is great to hear and hugely brave during already challenging times. I, for one, am excited to hear how this new direction merges with his excellent earlier material to create a whole new body of work.
