The enigmatic Jo Beth Young is
back having ditched her Rise and Talitha Rise passports in the bin at Folkestone
docks to assume her original moniker for the release of her new single. ‘Allumez’
opens with the kind of atmospheric melodies that come with the emergence of a
new, extra-terrestrial visitor from some kind of cocoon. Young’s vocal is
distinctly unique in its power and blend of folk meets country with a very
modern edge that skirts close to the likes of Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush. When
the drums join in with a laconic, Ringo Starr style the song takes on a spaced
out Haight Ashbury vibe and if you don’t let yourself get swept away by this
one then you’re holding on too tight.
