MELK – EP REVIEW

Melk – Melk EP

Release Date: Out Now

The reliably excellent Spencer Kilpatrick is back with his compadres in the elusive Melk and they have five tracks of heartbreak to wash over you like cleansing holy water. This EP opens with ‘Exhausted’, a fuzzy blues stomp that drags its sorry ass out of bad at around 2.00pm, slips on yesterday’s jeans, an old shirt and a pair of sunglasses before drinking cold coffee on the way to the bar. Essentially, it’s the Dude on a bad day but in musical form and once the searing guitar solo has finished with your head then any trace of a hangover will have bled out of your ears.

‘Take All Of My Time’ immediately perks up the energy levels with a bone rattling romp on a Blues Brothers tip while ‘Alright’ gets all G Love and the Special Sauce on our collective asses with a chilled riff and the laid back, gravelly vocals that Kilpatrick is well known for from his native Reno all the way across the pond. On ‘City’ the mood slows down again for a slinky, fuzzy little number that makes you want to get in a convertible and drive out in the middle of the dessert just to watch the neon lights come on over the horizon at dusk. The EP closes out on ‘Listen’ which is a Kilpatrick speciality; starting slow like a late night jam after closing time before kicking it up a notch and getting a cocktail made with just a nod and a wink at the barman clearing up. Garage with soul, blues with grunge – Melk is always a good choice.
