The press release for Luna’s new
single ‘Night Drive’ describes her as a “rising star of UK Electronica” which,
in my haste, I read as “Ukulelectronica”. Alas, there are no Formby vs Aphex
Twin mashups here but what we do have is a tune of distinctly beautiful shape
and proportion. The Liverpudlian singer-songwriter allows this one to shimmer
into life with a simple piano melody and pure vocal before a pulsating beat and
sprinkled magic promises something bigger to come. And then it comes. A chorus
that changes the tempo and lifts the spirits despite a pervading sadness and
sense of loss that runs throughout the tune. Stunning stuff.
