I am more excited about the forthcoming
new album from the superb Tami Neilson than I am about most things in 2020 so
this single is something between a treat and a tease. ‘You Were Mine’ is a
slower, smokier number than the previous releases by Neilson but it is still absolutely
stunning. With a voice that is somewhere between Amy Winehouse, Shirley Bassey
and Liza Minelli and a band that will surely all be wearing undone bowties, Neilson
weaves a tale of heartbreak, loss and late-night introspection. The album comes
out on Valentine’s day and I strongly urge you to put a reminder on your calendar
(although maybe write ‘Tami Neilson’s new album’ and not just ‘Tami Neilson’ unless
you want your other half to get jealous.
