JOLLYROGER – EP REVIEW

JollyRoger – Silent Mountain EP
JollyRoger - Silent Mountain EP

Release Date: Out Now

The Westcountry trio JollyRoger came to my attention in 2019 and they are making strong moves in to 2020 already which bodes well for a band who bring the good times wherever they go. The five track EP (50% of the proceeds go to http://sadsuk.org.uk/, by the way) opens with the title track ‘Silent Mountain’, a track with a brooding sea shanty of a beginning followed by a irresistible energy that is just perfect for getting a pub jumping. Up next is ‘Feeling Knackered (Jon Kanaka)’ is up next, the kind of song that works as a sing-along as well as a rowing chant and the acapella singing would give Fisherman’s Friends a run for their money.

‘Fisherman’s Girl’ is a gentle acoustic lament full of love and raw, honest romance while ‘Molly McGee’ continues the theme of wistfulness and tales of the heart all set to a simple guitar melody and some delicious vocal harmonies. The final track is a twist on a classic as ‘Drunken Rower (What shall we do?)’ takes a well-known song structure and adds a personal touch to the lyrics. JollyRoger are an authentic and accomplished bunch of musicians but they are also tonnes of fun so please welcome them in to your lives for everyone’s benefit.
