MATT PALMER BAND – EP REVIEW

Matt Palmer Band – A Rising Tide EP

Release Date: Out Now

Exeter based singer-songwriter Matt Palmer has wrangled himself together a band and the three of them have created this EP, ‘A Rising Tide’. With pinpoint accuracy and timeliness, the trio open with ‘Politic Blues’ and a real vibe of acoustic driven indie-grunge that is somewhere between Soulwax, Pearl Jam and the Unforgettable Truth. It’s a strong start. On ‘The Flood’, Palmer uses a moody acoustic riff and tense vocals to build the tension like Placebo jamming a new track as the rolling drums and throbbing bass add meat to the bones.

The mood mellows on ‘Chasing Butterflies’ with a more reflective and melancholic tone behind the classic three piece set up. The EP closes out on ‘Complications’ which returns to the tension of earlier tracks but with the 90s feel of bands like the Seahorses and Catherine Wheel. The Matt Palmer Band have a tone and energy which is pretty unique at the moment and it is delivered with a mixture of warmth and malevolence which is unsettling and engaging in equal measure.
