I’ve been seeing the Jacques crop
up all over the place recently so was pleased and unsurprised with the
excellence of their latest single. ‘Kiss the Pharaoh’ opens with middle eastern
inspired melodies played out on wonky, distorted guitars while the drums rattle
and roll in the next room and the bass broods in the corner with a fag hanging
from the corner of its mouth. The real piece de resistance, however, is the
voice of frontmant Finn who does that thing of mixing style and substance
perfectly, placed somewhere between Slaves, Ian Brown, Ian Curtis and singing a
song penned by Cassels in a really dark mood. The hype is entirely justified
and deserved.
