MYSTERY JETS – SINGLE REVIEW

Mystery Jets – Screwdriver (Caroline
Mystery Jets - Screwdriver
International)

Release Date: Out Now

I’ve always had time for the Mystery Jets, a good bunch doing something original if not always something that you love. However, the first single from their new album is an absolute belter and genuinely had me sitting up straight in my chair. ‘Screwdriver’ comes in at over five minutes long and starts like My Vitriol, the Arcade Fire and Tom Morello having a jam while streaming 24 news on screens all pointing into the studio. There’s a fraught tension to the guitars in the verse which is blown apart by a wall of noise in the chorus and it’s a brutal attack on the senses. “Hate masquerading as pride, say you’ve got God on your side but you’d wait while Jesus died” is just an example of the kind of lyrical aggression the band extol which is as abrasive as it is yearned for. The new album is due out in September and, on this evidence, it will be essential listening.
