Some artists I get genuinely excited
about receiving music from and Spencer Kilpatrick is one such artist. The man
that brought us Failure Machine has another project on the go by the name of
Melk which sees Kilpatrick team up with members of Reno compadres Moondog
Matinee and their first release is ‘Listen’. This debut recording is a slice of
liquid soul that starts off slow and moody like the last dance at the end of a
50s prom but this one has a kick. The rhythm kicks up with a Motown jive and
Kilpatrick’s trademark gravelly tones and yet again I’m in heaven. This is like
a supergroup featuring the likes of Ben Harper, Joe Cocker, Chuck Berry and
Benny Benjamin just jammin’ away at the end of the night and it feels like a
glorious secret to be let in on.
