DRAHLA – SINGLE REVIEW

Release Date: Out Now

There’s a bit of a buzz around Leeds trio Drahla right now and I think a lot of that comes down to the fact that they are a band which wants to push the limits of creativity rather than settling for shifting units or getting more social media followers. The band’s new single, ‘Stimulus for Living’, comes ahead of an eagerly anticipated album in May and it is arresting. Starting out like an audio visual art instillation with a sketchily recorded interview and some ill-advised DIY, this track soon breaks in to a wonky, Joy Division meets the Long Blondes slice of art-rock with grungy guitars, rattling drums and various other unidentifiable noises. The breathy and deadpan vocals of Luciel Brown give this a sense of real class that you only normally get from 70s bands from Paris or New York. All in all, I would love to see these guys opening for IDLES but I think it would be even more powerful and beneficial to get these guys on a stage ahead of a Little Mix concert – how many young minds could they switch on in one concert?
