THE VIRGINMARYS – SINGLE REVIEW

The Virginmarys – S.O.S.4.U.N.I.
The Virginmarys - S.O.S.4.U.N.I.

Release Date: 1st March 2019

I can’t believe nobody has called their band the Virginmarys before, it’s such a great rock’n’roll band name that it seems unlikely but this Macclesfield outfit have claimed the moniker for themselves and they are owning it. The new single, ‘S.O.S.4.U.N.I.’, is an urgent, twitchy and more than a little angry indie-rock track that fits in perfectly alongside a clutch of young British bands like the Velvet Hands, Jordan Allen and the Rezner. The duo behind this racked, Danny Dolan and Ally Dickarty, have a real sense of melody and raw energy but what sets them up well is that they have a way with words puts them up with that excellent early Arctic Monkeys material; “When you’ve drunk depression dry, the Catcher in the Rye, well I was lost inside crossing lines got a head like a landmine”. There is boredom, frustration, dissatisfaction and a whole lot of drive packed in to this song and we’re going to need a lot more like it with the way the world is heading. More please.
