So you want to make a video with
a retro chat show pastiche and you need a host – how many calls do you have to
make before you get to Danny Trejo? I mean, I love Trejo but he’s a crazy
machete wielding guy, not a turtle-neck wearing chat show host. Until now. The
superb Nick Waterhouse has created one of my favourite videos of all time for
‘Wreck the Rod’ which has a wonderful soul infused Motown vibe with sharp vocals
and a gorgeous baritone sax. The song opens with the lyric “Love’s not a
gamble, love is a trap. Love is a lovely suicide pact” delivered like a Vegas
back-bar crooner and the song hits its stride, interrupted by an increasingly
jaded Nick Waterhouse being grilled by Trejo. The song is great on its own and the
video would work as SNL sketch but together this is just sublime. Oh, and
Waterhouse can rock the frilled shirt whilst doing high kicks with the best of
them.
